Solid bronze, hand-cast goddess Lakshmi (Laxmi), the deity of beauty and abundance, bringer of wealth, on elaborate lotus-sculpted and inscribed base. The graceful depiction of the goddess stands 13 inches tall and weighs 10 lbs. She is in Blessing Position, her lower arms and hands open. The two upper hands clasp lotuses, symbols of fortune, beauty, self-knowledge and spiritual liberation. Lakshmi's other two henna-inscribed hands are in the abhaya "fear not" and varada "boon-granting" mudras.
The blessed, or enlivened, statue (known as a murti once it has been blessed for temple use) is richly detailed, all the way down to the anklets and realistically engraved feet. This Lakshmi murti was commissioned for a yajna temple in Maharashtra. It was created in the ancient "lost wax" method by artisans in South India -- each sculpture made this way is one-of-a-kind. Lakshmi occupied a niche in the yajna temple, over a sacred fire tended by Brahmin priests, for more than a month. The statue was then hand-carried to the United States and has been in the possession of one owner for three decades. Perfect condition. Unusually beautiful Lakshmi. $450.00 - cash only. Pick up in Burlington from owner.
