Augustus Hand (September 24 1782 - May 7 1851) of the larger Hand family of New York and Vermont led a colorful, adventurous life. After early years as an ocean seafaring ship mate, then ship Captain and ship Master, he operated a Mercantile business from Larrabee's Point, Lake Champlain, just south of Hand's Cove, then retired as a farmer in Ferrisburgh. Mr. Hand, his wife, and younger son are buried in the North Ferrisburgh Cemetery. This 24.50" x 31.50" half-length portrait, commissioned by his older son, is for sale and hopefully will not leave Vermont. It is an important collectible for a Ferrisburgh citizen or organization. Voluminous Hand family history, portrait provenance, and photos can be found with an appraisal at: augustushand.com $2800.
