This vintage New York International Airport Firefighter's coat was given to Capt. W.J.D. on February 24, 1967 after he and his crew safely landed the DC-6B after a near disastrous decompression at 15000 feet. The resulting hole in the fuselage was apx. 10' x 12'. (See picture of Capt wearing it while inspecting the damage with his crew on the night.)
The flight, was Northeast Airlines #648. It was in the middle of the night and the temperature at that altitude were sub-zero. The flight was scheduled to land in Boston, but, needed to divert to NYIA /Idlewild / JFK after the incident.
This jacket/coat is one given to Capt. W.J.D. as the overcoats of the crew had been sucked out of the aircraft.
If you are into collecting Firefighter gear, this is a fine item. One thing to note, is the Airport in 1967, was already referred to as JFK. The name being changed in 1963 or 1964 to the best of my knowledge to JFK. But, the Firefighter coats still carried the NYIA identifier on the back of the coats.
I have more information from the The Port Of NY Authority. That is what the port authority was called in 1967.
There was an exchange of letters between Capt. WJD and the Manager of the Aeronautical Services Division of the Authority.
PLEASE MAKE SURE ANY EMAIL INQUIRY INTO THIS COAT INCLUDES YOUR NAME AND TELEPHONE NUMBER. I ONLY RESPOND TO CRAIGSLIST INQUIRIES BY LIVE TELEPHONE CALLBACKS. (Yes, I know quite vintage thinking.) but, it weeds out scammers. Your caller ID will show someone calling you from area Code 802.
That is Vermont. That is the location of the coat currently. (You may also call me)
NOTE: Ideally, we feel this coat belongs in either the JFK Intl. Airport museum or if the Port Authority has one, it belongs there. If you are affiliated with a museum contact me and we can discuss this coat and how to best include it in an exhibit. I have not had any success in reaching the appropriate persons to discuss that option.
