Honeycomb Kids of Richmond Vermont is now accepting applications for part time afternoon teaching position 2 to 4 days a week for the rest of the 2018/19 school year.
Honeycomb Kids is a LifeWays program, http://lifewaysnorthamerica.org However, we utilize multiple developmental approaches (Waldorf, Montessori, Reggio Emelia, etc). Our core principles are founded in LifeWays, Nature and Place Based educational practices. Honeycomb Kids is a 5 STAR, licensed home program. We have 12 kids during the preschool day and between 9 and 12 in the afternoons with 2 to 3 adults present at all times.
Inside the school house, the rhythm of the 'home' is the foundation for our curriculum, and we engage with the children in 'purposeful work' like cooking, cleaning, organizing, self-care, caring for the younger children, making our own toys and materials, as well as planning and investigating relevant subjects over time. Outside, we have long periods of uninterrupted free play in forests, fields, and in our outdoor classroom. We are outside for 2 to 3 long periods of time each day. We are a mixed age program, with children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years during the day and up to age 7 in the afternoon.
The afternoon responsibilities consist of preparing a healthy snack, overseeing free-play- either inside or outside, and being available to have meaningful one-on-one connections with each child and family. The afternoons are "open" for spontaneous projects and play endeavors and are intentionally "low-key" and loosely structured compared to the pre-k morning so children have time to make meaningful decisions in their play and make connections with adults and their peers in a calm and unhurried manner. This position requires some light tidying of the school house for the next day.
The ideal candidate is an individual who has a background in child development, enjoys outdoor education, is comfortable outside with children, and has experience working with children. Creativity and compassion are key requirements and also someone who is patient, clean and organized, and enjoys working with children are a must. A successful candidate will be able to take on increasing levels of responsibility in terms of spontaneous curriculum planning and implementation as well as become an active participant in creating a supportive community for parents in their parenting journey.
